How to Apply Liquid Lipstick Evenly

Prep your lips, apply from the center outward in thin layers, and clean up the edges with a small brush.

Perfect application matters more than perfect lips—technique can make a drugstore formula look like luxury.

  1. Prep your lips. Exfoliate with a lip scrub or soft toothbrush, then apply a thin layer of lip balm. Blot excess balm after 30 seconds so the lipstick adheres properly.
  2. Start from the center. Place the applicator at the center of your bottom lip and press down gently. This creates an anchor point and prevents overloading one side with product.
  3. Work outward in sections. Drag the applicator from center to corner on one side, then repeat on the other side. Use the tip of the applicator to trace your lip line precisely.
  4. Fill in the upper lip. Start at the cupid's bow and work outward to each corner. The upper lip needs less product than the lower lip to look balanced.
  5. Clean up and perfect. Use a small flat brush with concealer or a lip brush to sharpen the edges. Check for any gaps and fill them in with light dabbing motions.
