How to Create an Ombre Lip Look

Use two shades to create a gradient effect by applying darker color to the outer corners and lighter shade to the center, blending where they meet.

Perfect ombre lips look effortless but require precision timing—blend fast or not at all.

  1. Prep your lips. Exfoliate with a lip scrub and apply a thin layer of lip balm. Wait five minutes, then gently blot away excess balm with a tissue to create a smooth base.
  2. Apply the lighter shade. Start with your lighter color in the center of both lips, focusing on the inner two-thirds. Press and roll the lipstick to build up opacity without dragging.
  3. Add the darker shade. Apply your darker color to the outer corners of your lips, working inward about halfway. Keep the application concentrated on the edges for maximum contrast.
  4. Blend the gradient. Use your finger or a small brush to gently pat where the two colors meet, creating a seamless transition. Work quickly while the product is still malleable.
  5. Perfect the shape. Clean up edges with concealer on a small brush if needed. Add a touch more of either shade to intensify the gradient effect.
