The Centre-Only Gloss Technique
Matte lipstick offers a structured, long-wearing finish, but it can appear flat under certain lighting conditions. The centre-only gloss technique introduces high-shine contrast to the middle of the lips, creating the visual impression of depth without compromising the longevity of the matte base.
This method relies on careful placement rather than full-lip coverage to maintain the integrity of the matte pigment.
- Prepare a dry matte base. Apply your preferred matte lipstick across the entire lip area. Ensure the pigment is dry and set before proceeding to the next step. If the lipstick is freshly applied, wait thirty seconds for the formula to fix itself.
- Select a clear formula. Choose a clear, non-sticky gloss. Avoid products with glitter or heavy pigment, as these will disrupt the clean line of the matte border. Use the applicator to dot a small amount of product onto the back of your hand first.
- Focus on the inner cushion. Using your fingertip, pick up a tiny amount of the gloss from your hand. Tap the gloss gently onto the center of your bottom lip. Keep the application contained to the inner third, away from the lip line.
- Mirror the application. Transfer a small amount of the remaining gloss from your finger to the center of your top lip. Keep the shape confined to the 'cupid’s bow' area. Do not spread the gloss toward the corners of the mouth.
- Check the perimeter. Examine your lips in a mirror to ensure the matte edges remain untouched by the gloss. If the gloss has migrated too far, use a clean cotton swab to remove the excess from the perimeter. The transition should be subtle, not blurred.
Depth is created by contrast, not by total coverage.
