Makeup for Hooded Eyes

Create the illusion of more lid space by placing color above your natural crease and keeping the mobile lid light.

Stop trying to change your eye shape and start working with it. Hooded eyes are striking when you enhance them instead of fighting them.

  1. Map your eye shape. Look straight ahead in a mirror. If your crease disappears when your eyes are open, you have hooded eyes. The key is working with what you can see, not what you think should be there.
  2. Prime and set. Use eyeshadow primer on the entire lid and up to the brow bone. Set with a light powder or nude shadow to prevent transfer onto your upper lid when you blink.
  3. Find your fake crease. With eyes open, use a fluffy brush to apply transition color above where your natural crease would be. This creates the illusion of a deeper-set eye and more lid space.
  4. Keep the mobile lid light. Apply lighter, shimmery shades only to the visible part of your lid when eyes are open. Dark colors here will make your eyes look smaller and more hooded.
  5. Line strategically. Use thin liner that doesn't extend past the outer corner. Thick liner will eat up your precious lid space and make eyes appear smaller.
  6. Curl and lift. Curl lashes well and use lengthening mascara rather than volumizing. Focus on lifting lashes up and out to open the eye area.
