How to Do a Monochrome Makeup Look

Use the same color family across eyes, lips, and cheeks for a cohesive look that appears effortless and modern.

Monochrome makeup is the difference between looking like you tried and looking like you know something others don't.

  1. Choose your color family. Pick one color and commit to its spectrum—warm browns, cool roses, or deep berries work best. Avoid colors that clash with your undertones or wash you out completely.
  2. Start with the eyes. Apply your chosen shade across the lid, blending upward and outward. Use a lighter version of the same color to highlight the inner corners and brow bone.
  3. Match the cheeks. Apply blush in the same color family to the apples of your cheeks, blending upward toward your temples. The shade should complement your eye color without competing.
  4. Coordinate the lips. Finish with a lip color in the same family—it can be slightly deeper or lighter than your eye shade. Blend the edges for a soft, lived-in finish.
