Birthday Party Makeup That Actually Photographs Well

Build your look around one statement feature—bold eyes or bold lips, never both—and amp up your base coverage to handle flash photography.

  1. Prime for longevity. Start with a mattifying primer on your T-zone and a hydrating one everywhere else. Birthday parties mean hours of wear, dancing, and probably some crying from laughter.
  2. Build a photo-ready base. Use medium to full coverage foundation—flash photography will wash you out otherwise. Set with translucent powder, focusing on areas that get oily first.
  3. Define your features boldly. Contour slightly deeper than usual and use a peachy blush rather than pink. The warmth reads better under party lighting and in photos.
  4. Choose your statement. Pick either eyes or lips as your focus. For eyes, try a metallic shadow or winged liner. For lips, choose a long-wearing formula in a shade that complements your outfit.
  5. Lock it down. Finish with setting spray and keep your chosen lip color with you. Everything else should last through the celebration.
