How to Apply Foil Eyeshadow Like a Pro

Foil eyeshadows need a damp flat brush and patting motions to achieve their signature metallic intensity.

  1. Prep your base. Apply eyeshadow primer or a sticky base to clean lids. This prevents the metallic particles from falling out during the day and makes the color more vibrant.
  2. Dampen your brush. Use a flat synthetic brush and lightly mist it with setting spray or water. The brush should be damp, not soaking—excess moisture will make the shadow muddy.
  3. Pack the shadow on. Press the damp brush into the foil eyeshadow, then gently pat it onto your lid. Avoid sweeping motions which will disturb the metallic finish and create patches.
  4. Build the intensity. Let each layer dry for 30 seconds before adding more. This prevents the shadow from lifting off and creates that mirror-like finish foils are known for.
