How to Build a Starter Makeup Kit
Start with five products: concealer, mascara, cream blush, tinted lip balm, and brow gel.
Most starter kits include too much—you'll reach for the same three products anyway, so start there and add consciously.
- Choose Your Base. Skip foundation initially—concealer covers what matters most. Pick one shade that matches your skin exactly and blend with fingers or a damp beauty sponge. You'll use less product and look more natural.
- Define Your Eyes. Mascara makes the biggest impact for the least effort. Choose brown if you have fair features, black for everyone else. One coat on top lashes only—bottom lashes can wait until you're more comfortable.
- Add Color to Cheeks. Cream blush looks like it comes from within. Apply with fingers to the apples of your cheeks and blend upward. Cream formulas are harder to overdo than powder.
- Perfect Your Lips. Tinted lip balm gives color while keeping lips comfortable. Choose a shade close to your natural lip color but slightly more intense. This becomes your everyday default.
- Frame Your Brows. Clear or tinted brow gel shapes without requiring precision. Brush upward and outward to lift your face instantly. Skip the pencils and powders until you master this basic step.
