How to Choose the Right Makeup Brushes
Match brush density and shape to your product texture and desired finish.
The perfect brush disappears during application - you forget you're holding anything at all.
- Start with synthetic for liquid products. Synthetic bristles don't absorb liquid foundation, concealer, or cream products. They push product onto skin instead of soaking it up. Natural brushes work against you with liquids.
- Choose natural for powder products. Natural bristles pick up and distribute powder evenly. They have a texture that grabs powder without being scratchy. Goat hair is the gold standard for eyeshadow and blush.
- Match brush size to area coverage. Large fluffy brushes for setting powder and bronzer. Medium brushes for blush and eyeshadow transition. Small precise brushes for concealer and detail work.
- Test brush density with gentle pressure. Dense brushes give full coverage and precise application. Fluffy brushes blend and diffuse. Press the brush gently - it should feel substantial but not stiff.
- Check for shedding before buying. Gently tug on bristles or brush against your hand. Quality brushes shed minimally. Excessive shedding means poor construction that will only get worse with washing.
