How to Organize Your Makeup Collection

Group by function, store by frequency of use, and edit ruthlessly.

Most people own three times more makeup than they actually use—organization is really about honest editing.

  1. Empty everything out. Pull every product from every drawer, bag, and surface. You cannot organize what you cannot see. This step reveals duplicates and expired products you forgot existed.
  2. Sort by category. Create piles: complexion, eyes, lips, tools. Within each pile, subcategorize further—foundations separate from concealers, eyeshadows from liners. This reveals gaps and redundancies in your collection.
  3. Assess and edit. Check expiration dates and toss anything past its prime. Test products that look questionable—if the texture or smell has changed, it goes. Keep only what you actually use or genuinely love.
  4. Assign homes by frequency. Daily essentials get prime real estate—easy reach, good lighting. Weekly products go in secondary spots. Special occasion makeup can live in less accessible areas.
  5. Store vertically when possible. Stand lipsticks, liners, and mascaras upright in containers or drawer dividers. This maximizes space and lets you see everything at once instead of digging through horizontal piles.
