How to Use Setting Powder on Oily Skin

Apply setting powder with a damp beauty sponge in a pressing motion to oily areas after foundation, focusing on your T-zone.

Most people use too much powder trying to prevent oil breakthrough, but your skin will produce oil regardless—the goal is control, not elimination.

  1. Start with clean application tools. Use a slightly damp beauty sponge or a fluffy powder brush. Damp sponges prevent powder from looking cakey while brushes give lighter coverage.
  2. Apply to your T-zone first. Press powder into your forehead, nose, and chin where oil typically breaks through first. Use a pressing motion rather than sweeping to avoid disturbing your foundation underneath.
  3. Build coverage gradually. Start with a light layer and add more only where needed. Your under-eye area and center of your face usually need the most setting power.
  4. Blend the edges. Softly blend where powder meets bare skin or lighter coverage areas. This prevents obvious texture lines and keeps your finish looking natural.
