How to Create Butterfly Nails
Layer iridescent polish over a base color, then use a thin brush to draw wing outlines and add delicate details with contrasting shades.
- Prep the base. Apply base coat and let dry completely. Paint two coats of your chosen background color—nude, white, or soft pink work beautifully. The base needs to be opaque and smooth for the butterfly details to pop.
- Add iridescent layer. Apply a sheer iridescent or holographic topcoat while the base is still slightly tacky. This creates that natural wing shimmer without looking overdone. Let this set for five minutes before moving on.
- Draw wing outlines. Use a fine detail brush with black or dark brown polish to sketch basic butterfly wing shapes. Start with the upper wings, then add smaller lower wings. Keep the lines thin and slightly asymmetrical for a more organic look.
- Fill and detail. Add small dots, lines, or color blocks within the wing outlines using bright polish colors. Think coral, purple, or electric blue for tropical butterflies, or stick to metallics for something more subtle. Finish with a glossy topcoat to seal everything.
