How to Create Jelly Nails at Home

Jelly nails are achieved by layering sheer, translucent polish to create a glossy, glass-like effect that mimics the texture of jelly candy.

  1. Prep your base. Start with clean, filed nails and apply a clear base coat. This creates the smooth foundation needed for the translucent layers to build properly without streaking.
  2. Choose your jelly polish. Select a sheer, translucent polish in your desired color—think glass-like tints rather than opaque shades. The polish should be see-through enough that you can see your nail bed through it.
  3. Build with thin layers. Apply 2-4 thin coats of your jelly polish, letting each layer dry completely before adding the next. The translucent effect builds gradually—rushing this step ruins the glassy finish.
  4. Seal with high-gloss topcoat. Finish with a thick, glossy topcoat to amplify the jelly effect. The topcoat should be glass-like in finish—this is what creates that distinctive candy-like shine.
