How to Do a Gel Manicure at Home
Prep nails, apply base coat, two thin color coats, and top coat, curing each layer under UV or LED light for the specified time.
Most people apply gel polish too thick because they want coverage in one coat, then wonder why it chips in three days.
- Prep your nails. Push back cuticles and file nails to your desired shape. Buff the surface lightly to remove shine, then wipe with rubbing alcohol to remove oils. Clean nails cure better.
- Apply base coat. Paint a thin layer of gel base coat, avoiding the cuticle area. Cure under your lamp for the time specified on your product. This creates the foundation for color adhesion.
- Apply color in thin layers. Paint two thin coats of gel polish, curing between each application. Thin layers prevent bubbling and ensure even coverage that won't chip.
- Seal with top coat. Apply gel top coat and cure for the final time. Wipe nails with rubbing alcohol to remove the sticky residue layer that forms during curing.
- Moisturize. Apply cuticle oil and hand cream after your manicure is complete. Your nails and surrounding skin need hydration after the alcohol and light exposure.
