How to Do a Professional-Level Pedicure at Home

Soak, exfoliate, push cuticles, trim and file nails, apply base coat, two thin polish coats, and top coat.

Most people rush the drying between coats and wonder why their pedicure looks amateur. Patience is the difference between salon-quality results and a waste of polish.

  1. Remove old polish and prep. Use acetone-free remover to clear any existing polish. Wash feet with soap and dry completely. This creates a clean canvas for your work.
  2. Soak and soften. Fill a basin with warm water and soak feet for 10-15 minutes. Add a few drops of body wash or essential oil if you want. The goal is softening dead skin and cuticles.
  3. Exfoliate thoroughly. Use a pumice stone or foot file on damp skin, focusing on heels and ball of foot. Work in circular motions and rinse frequently to see your progress.
  4. Trim and shape nails. Cut toenails straight across with nail clippers, then file edges to prevent ingrown nails. Keep them slightly shorter than your toe tip.
  5. Push back cuticles. Use a cuticle pusher on softened cuticles, working gently around the nail bed. Never cut toenail cuticles – they protect against infection.
  6. Apply polish properly. Start with base coat, let dry completely. Apply two thin coats of color, allowing full drying between each. Finish with top coat for durability and shine.
