How to Remove Gel Nails Without Wrecking Your Natural Nails

Soak cotton balls in acetone, place on each nail, wrap in foil, wait 15 minutes, then gently push off the softened gel.

  1. File off the top coat. Use a coarse nail file to remove the shiny top layer of gel polish. You're breaking the seal so acetone can penetrate. Don't file down to your natural nail.
  2. Prepare acetone wraps. Soak cotton balls or pads in pure acetone—not nail polish remover. Place one on each nail and wrap fingertips in aluminum foil. The foil keeps acetone from evaporating.
  3. Wait and soak. Leave wraps on for 15-20 minutes. Longer isn't better—it just dries out your nails and skin unnecessarily.
  4. Gently remove gel. Remove foil and cotton, then use a cuticle pusher to gently slide off the softened gel. If it doesn't come off easily, soak for another 5 minutes rather than forcing it.
  5. Moisturize and recover. Apply cuticle oil and hand cream immediately. Your nails will be dehydrated from the acetone and need moisture restored.
