How to Fix a Broken Nail

Use a tea bag patch for clean breaks, file and shape for chips, or cut all nails to match for major breaks.

  1. Assess the damage. Look at where and how the nail broke. Clean breaks near the tip can be patched, while breaks into the nail bed need immediate cutting to prevent further tearing.
  2. Clean the area. Remove any polish and wash your hands thoroughly. Push back cuticles gently to see the full extent of the break.
  3. Apply the tea bag patch. Cut a small piece from an unused tea bag to cover the break. Apply base coat, place the tea bag piece over the crack, then apply another layer of base coat to seal it.
  4. File and shape. Once dry, file the patched area smooth, blending it with the rest of the nail. Shape all nails to match the repaired length.
  5. Apply your usual polish. The patch creates a smooth surface for color application. Use thin coats and seal with top coat for durability.
