How to Build Your First Skincare Routine
Start with cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF in the morning, then add one product at a time over weeks.
- Start with the basics. Begin with three products: a gentle cleanser, a basic moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF 30. Use the cleanser and moisturizer morning and night, SPF only in the morning. This foundation covers your skin's essential needs without overwhelming it.
- Test one product at a time. Introduce each new product with at least a week between additions. This lets you identify what works and what causes irritation. Patch test behind your ear first if you have sensitive skin.
- Build your morning routine. Apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency. Start with cleanser, follow with any serums, then moisturizer, and finish with SPF. Keep it simple until your skin adjusts.
- Create your evening routine. Night is for repair and treatment. Cleanse thoroughly, apply any active ingredients like retinol or acids, then moisturize. Skip SPF at night since you don't need sun protection while sleeping.
- Add treatments gradually. Once your basic routine feels comfortable after 4-6 weeks, consider adding targeted treatments. Start with one active ingredient like vitamin C for morning or retinol for evening, using it every other day initially.
