How to Build a Zero-Waste Skincare Routine
Cut waste by choosing multi-use products, refillable packaging, and using every drop through proper application techniques.
Waste reduction is about buying less, not buying different. Five products you love beats twenty you tolerate.
- Audit your current routine. List everything you own and use daily versus weekly. Most people use 20% of their products 80% of the time. Start there.
- Choose concentrated formulas. Serums, oils, and balms give you more product per gram than creams and lotions. A few drops of vitamin C serum covers your entire face versus pumps of a diluted cream.
- Master application techniques. Press products into skin instead of rubbing them around. Use clean, damp hands for better absorption. You need half the amount when your skin is slightly wet.
- Repurpose containers. Clean glass jars become perfect for DIY oil blends or decanting products for travel. Pump bottles can hold homemade toners or facial mists.
- Buy refillable systems. Many brands now offer refill pods for cleansers and moisturizers. The initial investment pays off after two refills, and you eliminate 70% of packaging waste.
