How to Double Cleanse Without Overdoing It
Use an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, then a water-based cleanser to clean your skin.
Double cleansing is not a luxury spa ritual. It's basic maintenance for anyone who puts things on their face during the day.
- Start with dry hands and dry face. Apply your oil cleanser to completely dry skin with dry hands. Water dilutes the oil and makes it less effective at breaking down makeup and sunscreen. Massage gently for 30-60 seconds.
- Add water to emulsify. Wet your hands and continue massaging your face. The oil will turn milky white as it emulsifies. This step helps the oil rinse away cleanly instead of leaving residue.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Remove all traces of the oil cleanser. Your skin should feel clean but not stripped or tight.
- Follow with your regular cleanser. Use your normal water-based cleanser as you usually would. This removes any remaining oil residue and cleanses your skin properly.
