How to Keep Your Skin Protected at the Beach All Day
Layer SPF 50+, reapply every two hours religiously, and add physical barriers when the sun peaks.
- Start with clean, prepped skin. Cleanse and apply a lightweight, water-resistant moisturizer 15 minutes before sunscreen. This creates a smooth base that helps SPF spread evenly and prevents your skin from feeling stripped by salt water.
- Apply sunscreen like you mean it. Use SPF 50+ broad-spectrum and apply a full shot glass worth to your body, a nickel-sized amount to your face. Don't forget ears, feet, and the back of your neck. Wait 15 minutes before sun exposure so it can properly bind to your skin.
- Time your reapplication religiously. Set a phone timer for every 2 hours, no exceptions. Reapply immediately after swimming or sweating heavily, even with water-resistant formulas. The ocean and sweat break down your protection faster than you think.
- Create shade during peak hours. Between 10 AM and 4 PM, seek or create shade with an umbrella or tent. UV rays are strongest during these hours and can penetrate water and sand reflection, doubling your exposure.
- Rinse and restore at day's end. Shower immediately to remove salt, sand, and sunscreen buildup. Apply a cooling gel or aloe-based moisturizer while skin is still damp to lock in hydration and soothe any heat exposure.
