How to Keep Your Skin Protected at the Beach All Day

Layer SPF 50+, reapply every two hours religiously, and add physical barriers when the sun peaks.

  1. Start with clean, prepped skin. Cleanse and apply a lightweight, water-resistant moisturizer 15 minutes before sunscreen. This creates a smooth base that helps SPF spread evenly and prevents your skin from feeling stripped by salt water.
  2. Apply sunscreen like you mean it. Use SPF 50+ broad-spectrum and apply a full shot glass worth to your body, a nickel-sized amount to your face. Don't forget ears, feet, and the back of your neck. Wait 15 minutes before sun exposure so it can properly bind to your skin.
  3. Time your reapplication religiously. Set a phone timer for every 2 hours, no exceptions. Reapply immediately after swimming or sweating heavily, even with water-resistant formulas. The ocean and sweat break down your protection faster than you think.
  4. Create shade during peak hours. Between 10 AM and 4 PM, seek or create shade with an umbrella or tent. UV rays are strongest during these hours and can penetrate water and sand reflection, doubling your exposure.
  5. Rinse and restore at day's end. Shower immediately to remove salt, sand, and sunscreen buildup. Apply a cooling gel or aloe-based moisturizer while skin is still damp to lock in hydration and soothe any heat exposure.
