How to Protect Your Skin During Cold Snaps

Switch to heavier moisturizers, add a facial oil, and create barriers against harsh wind.

  1. Switch Your Moisturizer. Replace lightweight lotions with cream-based moisturizers that contain ceramides or hyaluronic acid. Your summer gel moisturizer won't cut it when temperatures drop suddenly.
  2. Layer a Facial Oil. Apply 2-3 drops of facial oil before your moisturizer while skin is still damp. This creates an extra barrier that locks in moisture when cold air tries to strip it away.
  3. Cover Exposed Areas. Wear a scarf that covers your neck and lower face, and don't forget lip balm with SPF. Wind chill damages skin faster than cold alone.
  4. Adjust Your Cleansing. Skip harsh foaming cleansers and switch to cream or oil-based cleansers temporarily. Your skin barrier is already working overtime against the cold.
