How to Keep Your Skin Protected at the Pool

Layer waterproof SPF over antioxidant serum, reapply every 80 minutes, and rinse chlorine off immediately after swimming.

  1. Prime with antioxidants. Apply vitamin C serum 15 minutes before sunscreen. Antioxidants create a barrier against chlorine damage and free radicals from UV exposure. Let it absorb completely before the next step.
  2. Apply waterproof SPF properly. Use mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide, applied thick enough that you can see white streaks before rubbing in. Chemical sunscreens break down in chlorinated water faster than mineral formulas. Cover ears, feet, and the back of your neck.
  3. Reapply every 80 minutes. Even waterproof formulas lose effectiveness after extended water contact. Set a timer and reapply to dry skin for best adhesion. Pay extra attention to shoulders and nose where water runs off first.
  4. Rinse immediately after swimming. Chlorine continues damaging skin even after you leave the pool. Rinse with fresh water within 10 minutes, then apply a hydrating mist or lightweight moisturizer while skin is still damp to lock in moisture.
