How to Protect Your Skin During Wildfire Smoke
Create a barrier against particulates with gentle cleansing, heavy moisturizing, and indoor air filtration.
- Double cleanse without overdoing it. Use an oil cleanser first to dissolve smoke residue, then a gentle gel or cream cleanser. Smoke particles stick to oil and makeup, so you need that first step to actually remove them instead of pushing them around.
- Layer moisture like your life depends on it. Apply a hydrating serum while skin is still damp, then seal with a heavier moisturizer than usual. Smoke strips moisture from the air and your skin, so you need more protection than normal to maintain your barrier function.
- Keep indoor air clean. Run air purifiers with HEPA filters and keep windows closed. Your skincare routine means nothing if you're constantly exposing your face to particulates that will inflame and irritate.
- Minimize outdoor time and makeup. Skip foundation when possible—it can trap particles against your skin. If you must wear makeup, use a primer as a barrier and remove it completely as soon as you're indoors.
