Managing Hormonal Skin Changes
Hormonal skin changes require gentle consistency—stick to basics, avoid over-treating, and adjust your routine as your skin shifts through different phases.
Hormonal skin is unpredictable skin, so building a flexible routine beats chasing perfect products.
- Strip back to basics. When hormones disrupt your skin, more products aren't the answer. Use a gentle cleanser, lightweight moisturizer, and SPF daily. Skip actives until your skin stabilizes—irritated hormonal skin gets worse with aggressive treatment.
- Time your routine to your cycle. Your skin is most sensitive the week before your period, so switch to extra-gentle products then. The week after your period ends, your skin can handle more—this is when to introduce any new treatments or actives.
- Focus on barrier repair. Hormonal fluctuations compromise your skin barrier, leading to sensitivity and breakouts. Use ceramide or niacinamide-based moisturizers to strengthen your skin's natural defense system.
- Spot-treat strategically. For hormonal breakouts, use salicylic acid only on active spots—never all over your face. Apply after cleansing but before moisturizer, and only use it every other day to avoid irritation.
