How to Fade Dark Spots at Home
Layer vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night, and use SPF 30+ daily to gradually fade hyperpigmentation over 8-12 weeks.
Most people sabotage their progress by skipping SPF or mixing incompatible acids — pick three products maximum and use them religiously for three months before declaring defeat.
- Start with vitamin C serum. Apply a stable vitamin C serum every morning after cleansing. Look for L-ascorbic acid or magnesium ascorbyl phosphate concentrations between 10-20%. This inhibits melanin production and brightens existing spots over time.
- Add retinol at night. Use retinol 2-3 times per week initially, building to nightly use as your skin adapts. Start with 0.25% concentration and increase gradually. Retinol accelerates cell turnover, bringing fresh skin to the surface faster.
- Layer alpha hydroxy acids. Use glycolic or lactic acid 2-3 times per week on non-retinol nights. These chemical exfoliants remove the top layer of pigmented cells and improve product penetration. Never use AHAs and retinol together.
- Apply SPF religiously. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day, even indoors. UV exposure darkens existing spots and creates new ones. Reapply every 2 hours if you're outside.
