How to Minimize Smile Lines at Home
Consistent hydration, targeted skincare with retinoids and peptides, facial massage, and sun protection slow the formation of smile lines.
Smile lines are proof you've lived well — the goal is managing them, not erasing your entire emotional history from your face.
- Lock in moisture twice daily. Use a hyaluronic acid serum while skin is damp, then seal with a ceramide moisturizer. Dehydrated skin shows lines more prominently, and plump, hydrated skin naturally smooths surface wrinkles.
- Add a retinol product. Start with retinol twice weekly at night, building to every other night. Retinoids stimulate cell turnover and collagen production over months, gradually softening existing lines.
- Massage with upward pressure. Use your ring fingers to gently press and sweep from the corners of your mouth up toward your temples for 30 seconds each side. This promotes circulation and temporarily plumps the area.
- Never skip SPF. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 daily, reapplying every two hours in direct sun. UV damage breaks down collagen and elastin, accelerating line formation around expressive areas like the mouth.
