How to Build a Gentle Routine for Sensitive Skin

Less is more—stick to fragrance-free basics and introduce new products one at a time.

Sensitive skin is not a life sentence—it's usually a damaged barrier that needs time and consistency, not a cabinet full of special products.

  1. Start with the gentlest cleanser. Use a cream or lotion cleanser without sulfates, fragrances, or essential oils. Massage with fingertips for 30 seconds, rinse with lukewarm water. Your skin should feel clean but never tight or stripped.
  2. Wait before applying anything else. Let your skin air dry for 2-3 minutes after cleansing. This prevents trapping water under products, which can cause irritation. Pat gently with a clean towel if needed.
  3. Apply moisturizer to damp skin. Choose something with ceramides or hyaluronic acid and zero fragrance. Apply while skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration. This is your non-negotiable step.
  4. Add SPF as your final morning step. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are typically gentler than chemical ones. Start with SPF 30 and work up if your skin tolerates it well.
