How to Make DIY Bath Salts That Actually Work

Combine coarse sea salt or Epsom salt with a carrier oil and essential oils, mix thoroughly, and store in an airtight container.

  1. Choose your salt base. Use coarse sea salt for texture or Epsom salt for muscle relief. Dead Sea salt works too but costs more for the same effect. Avoid table salt—it dissolves too quickly and lacks minerals.
  2. Add carrier oil. Mix in 1-2 tablespoons of jojoba, sweet almond, or fractionated coconut oil per cup of salt. This prevents the salt from drying out your skin and helps essential oils distribute evenly.
  3. Blend in essential oils. Add 10-15 drops total per cup of salt mixture. Lavender for relaxation, eucalyptus for energy, or bergamot for mood lifting work well. Mix thoroughly to avoid concentrated spots that could irritate skin.
  4. Store properly. Transfer to an airtight glass jar or container. Label with ingredients and date—homemade bath salts stay fresh for 6 months when stored away from moisture and direct sunlight.
