How to Make DIY Setting Spray for Makeup

Mix distilled water with a hydrating ingredient like glycerin or aloe vera gel in a spray bottle for a basic setting spray that helps makeup last longer.

  1. Choose your base. Use distilled water as your foundation. Tap water contains minerals that can irritate skin and create bacteria in your bottle over time.
  2. Add your binding agent. Mix in 1-2 teaspoons of vegetable glycerin per cup of water for hydration, or use pure aloe vera gel for sensitive skin. These help the spray adhere to makeup without breaking it down.
  3. Include a preservative. Add a few drops of witch hazel or a tiny amount of rubbing alcohol to prevent bacterial growth. Skip this if you plan to use the spray within a week.
  4. Mix and test. Combine in a clean spray bottle, shake well, and test the mist quality. Adjust the nozzle until you get a fine, even spray that won't drench your face.
