How to Fix Winter Dry Skin
Layer hydrating products while your skin is still damp and seal everything with a heavier moisturizer than you use in summer.
- Switch to a gentler cleanser. Cold air strips your skin's natural oils, so harsh cleansers make things worse. Use a cream or oil-based cleanser that doesn't leave your skin feeling tight. Your face shouldn't feel squeaky clean.
- Apply products to damp skin. Pat your face dry after cleansing, leaving it slightly damp. This traps water under your moisturizer. Think of it as creating a moisture sandwich with your skin as the filling.
- Layer your hydration. Start with a hydrating serum or essence, then follow with moisturizer. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin pull moisture into your skin. Layer them under something heavier to lock it all in.
- Upgrade your moisturizer. Your summer gel moisturizer won't cut it. Switch to something with ceramides, shea butter, or squalane. If your skin still feels tight after moisturizing, you need something heavier.
- Don't skip SPF. Winter sun plus snow reflection equals more UV exposure than you think. Use a moisturizing SPF or layer sunscreen over your heavier moisturizer. Your skin barrier needs protection year-round.
