How to Fade Dark Spots with At-Home Methods
Consistent use of gentle exfoliation, vitamin C, and religious sun protection will gradually lighten dark spots over 8-12 weeks.
- Start with gentle exfoliation. Use a mild chemical exfoliant with lactic acid or glycolic acid 2-3 times per week. This removes dead skin cells and helps newer, lighter skin surface faster. Start slowly to avoid irritation.
- Apply vitamin C in the morning. Use a stable vitamin C serum on clean skin before moisturizer. Vitamin C inhibits melanin production and brightens existing pigmentation. L-ascorbic acid works best but can irritate sensitive skin.
- Use SPF 30+ every single day. Sun exposure darkens spots and creates new ones faster than any treatment can fade them. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen even indoors near windows. Reapply every two hours outdoors.
- Try natural brightening ingredients. Kojic acid, arbutin, or licorice root extract can supplement your routine. These work more gently than hydroquinone but take longer to show results. Apply at night after cleansing.
