How to Use AHA in Your Skincare Routine
Start with a low concentration AHA product once or twice a week in the evening, always follow with SPF the next day.
Most people rush into daily AHA use and wonder why their skin rebels - patience with acids always pays off better than aggression.
- Start slow and patch test. Apply a small amount to your inner forearm and wait 24 hours to check for irritation. Begin with the lowest concentration available, typically 5-10% glycolic acid or lactic acid.
- Use only in evening routine. Apply AHA after cleansing but before moisturizer on clean, dry skin. Start with once or twice weekly applications to let your skin adjust to the exfoliation process.
- Layer correctly in your routine. Cleanse, apply AHA, wait 10-15 minutes, then follow with your regular serums and moisturizer. Never mix AHA directly with retinol or vitamin C in the same application.
- Always use SPF the next day. AHA makes your skin more photosensitive, so SPF 30 or higher is non-negotiable the morning after use. This protection is essential to prevent sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
