How to Use Azelaic Acid for Skin
Azelaic acid is a gentle exfoliant that reduces inflammation and uneven texture when applied to clean skin before moisturizer, starting 2-3 times weekly.
Azelaic acid is the acid for people who think they hate acids—effective enough to matter, gentle enough to use daily.
- Start with clean skin. Apply azelaic acid only to freshly cleansed, dry skin. Any residue or moisture will dilute the product and reduce effectiveness.
- Apply a thin layer. Use a pea-sized amount for your entire face, spreading evenly with gentle patting motions. Avoid the eye area where skin is too delicate.
- Wait before layering. Let the acid absorb for 10-15 minutes before applying moisturizer. This prevents pilling and ensures proper penetration.
- Follow with moisturizer. Always finish with a hydrating moisturizer to prevent dryness. Azelaic acid can be mildly drying, especially when starting out.
- Use SPF during the day. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning when using azelaic acid. While gentler than other acids, it still increases photosensitivity.
