How to Use Azelaic Acid for Skin

Azelaic acid is a gentle exfoliant that reduces inflammation and uneven texture when applied to clean skin before moisturizer, starting 2-3 times weekly.

Azelaic acid is the acid for people who think they hate acids—effective enough to matter, gentle enough to use daily.

  1. Start with clean skin. Apply azelaic acid only to freshly cleansed, dry skin. Any residue or moisture will dilute the product and reduce effectiveness.
  2. Apply a thin layer. Use a pea-sized amount for your entire face, spreading evenly with gentle patting motions. Avoid the eye area where skin is too delicate.
  3. Wait before layering. Let the acid absorb for 10-15 minutes before applying moisturizer. This prevents pilling and ensures proper penetration.
  4. Follow with moisturizer. Always finish with a hydrating moisturizer to prevent dryness. Azelaic acid can be mildly drying, especially when starting out.
  5. Use SPF during the day. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning when using azelaic acid. While gentler than other acids, it still increases photosensitivity.
