How to Use Kaolin Clay for Sensitive Skin

Mix kaolin clay with gentle liquids, apply thin layers for 5-10 minutes maximum, and remove before it fully dries to avoid irritation.

  1. Choose white kaolin clay. White kaolin is the gentlest clay variety with the finest particle size. Pink and red kaolin contain iron oxides that can be more stimulating for reactive skin.
  2. Mix with calming liquids. Blend clay powder with milk, honey, or plain water instead of acidic ingredients like lemon juice. Start with a 2:1 ratio of liquid to clay for a spreadable paste.
  3. Apply a thin, even layer. Use clean fingers or a flat brush to spread clay over clean skin, avoiding the eye area. Keep the layer thin enough that you can still see some skin through it.
  4. Remove while still damp. Rinse off after 5-10 minutes, before the clay turns completely dry and tight. Use lukewarm water and gentle circular motions to avoid pulling at skin.
  5. Follow with moisturizer. Apply your regular moisturizer immediately after patting skin dry. Clay draws out moisture along with oil, so hydration is essential even for sensitive types.
