How to Use Lactic Acid Without Destroying Your Skin
Start with 5% concentration once a week at night, build up slowly, and never skip SPF the next day.
Most people use acids like they're trying to sand off their entire face, then wonder why they look like a tomato.
- Start low and slow. Begin with 5% lactic acid once weekly on clean, dry skin. Your skin needs time to build tolerance, and jumping in with daily use guarantees irritation. Apply a thin layer and wait 20 minutes before moisturizer.
- Pick your timing. Use lactic acid only at night since it makes skin photosensitive. Apply after cleansing but before serums and moisturizer. Never layer with retinol, vitamin C, or other acids on the same night.
- Build up gradually. After 4 weeks of once-weekly use, increase to twice weekly if your skin shows no irritation. Most people max out at 3 times per week with 10% concentration, and that's plenty for smooth, glowing skin.
- Monitor and adjust. Mild tingling is normal for the first few minutes, but stop immediately if you experience burning, persistent redness, or peeling. Your skin will tell you if you're overdoing it.
