How to Start Using Mandelic Acid Without Destroying Your Face
Start with a low concentration mandelic acid product twice a week at night, always follow with moisturizer and wear SPF during the day.
Mandelic acid is the politest member of the acid family—it works without the drama of glycolic or the attitude of salicylic.
- Choose your concentration. Start with 5-10% mandelic acid maximum. Higher percentages exist but beginners need to build tolerance first. Look for products that list mandelic acid in the top five ingredients.
- Patch test properly. Apply a small amount behind your ear or on your inner wrist and wait 24 hours. No reaction means you can proceed to your face. Skip this and you might spend days looking like you lost a fight with a lobster.
- Start slow and strategic. Use only twice a week for the first month, always at night. Apply to clean, dry skin and wait 20 minutes before moisturizer. Your skin needs time to adjust to the acid.
- Layer correctly. Cleanse, apply mandelic acid, wait, then moisturize. Never mix with retinol, vitamin C, or other acids on the same night. Think of acids like dinner guests—they don't all play well together.
- Protect during the day. SPF 30 minimum every single day, even indoors. Acids make your skin more photosensitive, meaning sun damage happens faster. No exceptions, no excuses.
