How to Use Retinol Without Irritating Your Skin
Start with the lowest concentration once a week, buffer with moisturizer, and build tolerance gradually over months.
- Start low and slow. Choose a retinol with 0.25% or 0.5% concentration for your first bottle. Apply once a week on clean, dry skin and wait at least 20 minutes before moisturizer. Your skin needs time to build tolerance.
- Buffer if you're sensitive. Mix your retinol with moisturizer or apply moisturizer first, then retinol. This dilutes the concentration and creates a barrier that slows absorption. You'll still get benefits with less irritation.
- Build up gradually. After 2-3 weeks of once weekly use without irritation, move to twice a week. Continue this pattern until you reach every other night, then nightly if your skin tolerates it well.
- Skip the extras. On retinol nights, use only gentle cleanser, retinol, and moisturizer. No acids, vitamin C, or actives that compete for absorption or increase sensitivity.
- Moisturize religiously. Use a heavier moisturizer than usual and apply it generously. Retinol can be drying, so your skin needs extra hydration to prevent peeling and irritation.
