How to Use Retinol Without Irritating Your Skin

Start with the lowest concentration once a week, buffer with moisturizer, and build tolerance gradually over months.

  1. Start low and slow. Choose a retinol with 0.25% or 0.5% concentration for your first bottle. Apply once a week on clean, dry skin and wait at least 20 minutes before moisturizer. Your skin needs time to build tolerance.
  2. Buffer if you're sensitive. Mix your retinol with moisturizer or apply moisturizer first, then retinol. This dilutes the concentration and creates a barrier that slows absorption. You'll still get benefits with less irritation.
  3. Build up gradually. After 2-3 weeks of once weekly use without irritation, move to twice a week. Continue this pattern until you reach every other night, then nightly if your skin tolerates it well.
  4. Skip the extras. On retinol nights, use only gentle cleanser, retinol, and moisturizer. No acids, vitamin C, or actives that compete for absorption or increase sensitivity.
  5. Moisturize religiously. Use a heavier moisturizer than usual and apply it generously. Retinol can be drying, so your skin needs extra hydration to prevent peeling and irritation.
