How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Skin

Dilute tea tree oil to 5-10% with a carrier oil and spot-treat blemishes, or add a few drops to your cleanser for overall antimicrobial benefits.

Tea tree oil is the overachiever that actually delivers—just respect its strength and your skin will thank you for the restraint.

  1. Start with proper dilution. Mix 1-2 drops of tea tree oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil like jojoba or rosehip. Pure tea tree oil is too potent for direct skin contact and will cause irritation.
  2. Patch test first. Apply the diluted mixture to a small area on your inner arm and wait 24 hours. Tea tree oil can trigger reactions even when diluted properly.
  3. Apply to clean skin. Use a cotton swab to dab the diluted oil directly onto blemishes or problem areas. For larger areas, pat gently with clean fingertips and let absorb completely.
  4. Use sparingly and consistently. Start with once daily application in the evening. Tea tree oil works best with regular use over 2-4 weeks, but more isn't better.
