How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Skin
Dilute tea tree oil to 5-10% with a carrier oil and spot-treat blemishes, or add a few drops to your cleanser for overall antimicrobial benefits.
Tea tree oil is the overachiever that actually delivers—just respect its strength and your skin will thank you for the restraint.
- Start with proper dilution. Mix 1-2 drops of tea tree oil with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil like jojoba or rosehip. Pure tea tree oil is too potent for direct skin contact and will cause irritation.
- Patch test first. Apply the diluted mixture to a small area on your inner arm and wait 24 hours. Tea tree oil can trigger reactions even when diluted properly.
- Apply to clean skin. Use a cotton swab to dab the diluted oil directly onto blemishes or problem areas. For larger areas, pat gently with clean fingertips and let absorb completely.
- Use sparingly and consistently. Start with once daily application in the evening. Tea tree oil works best with regular use over 2-4 weeks, but more isn't better.
