How to Apply Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Without Looking Like a Ghost
Warm zinc oxide sunscreen between your palms and press it into skin in sections rather than rubbing it around.
Zinc oxide is the only sunscreen ingredient I trust completely, but most people apply it like they're frosting a cake instead of treating it like the sophisticated UV filter it actually is.
- Start with clean, dry skin. Apply zinc oxide to completely dry skin for proper adhesion. Any moisture underneath will cause pilling and uneven coverage.
- Warm the product first. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount into your palms and rub your hands together to warm the formula. This makes the thick texture more workable and prevents dragging.
- Press, don't rub. Pat and press the sunscreen into your skin in sections rather than rubbing it around. Work from the center of your face outward, blending the edges where sections meet.
- Build coverage gradually. Apply a thin first layer, let it settle for 30 seconds, then add more where needed. This prevents the chalky buildup that makes zinc oxide look obvious.
- Set with powder if needed. If you're wearing makeup over zinc oxide, use a light dusting of translucent powder to create a smooth base. Skip this step if going makeup-free.
