How to Apply Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Without Looking Like a Ghost

Warm zinc oxide sunscreen between your palms and press it into skin in sections rather than rubbing it around.

Zinc oxide is the only sunscreen ingredient I trust completely, but most people apply it like they're frosting a cake instead of treating it like the sophisticated UV filter it actually is.

  1. Start with clean, dry skin. Apply zinc oxide to completely dry skin for proper adhesion. Any moisture underneath will cause pilling and uneven coverage.
  2. Warm the product first. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount into your palms and rub your hands together to warm the formula. This makes the thick texture more workable and prevents dragging.
  3. Press, don't rub. Pat and press the sunscreen into your skin in sections rather than rubbing it around. Work from the center of your face outward, blending the edges where sections meet.
  4. Build coverage gradually. Apply a thin first layer, let it settle for 30 seconds, then add more where needed. This prevents the chalky buildup that makes zinc oxide look obvious.
  5. Set with powder if needed. If you're wearing makeup over zinc oxide, use a light dusting of translucent powder to create a smooth base. Skip this step if going makeup-free.
