How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs on Your Face

Exfoliate gently before shaving, use proper shaving technique with sharp blades, and keep skin moisturized to prevent hairs from curling back into follicles.

Most ingrown hair problems come from bad shaving habits, not bad skin - fix your technique before buying more products.

  1. Prep with gentle exfoliation. Use a soft washcloth or gentle scrub 2-3 times weekly to remove dead skin that traps hairs. Focus on areas where you typically get ingrowns. Skip harsh scrubs that irritate skin and make the problem worse.
  2. Master your shaving technique. Shave with the grain using a sharp, clean razor and proper shaving cream or oil. Never dry shave or use dull blades. Take single, smooth strokes without pressing too hard or going over the same spot repeatedly.
  3. Moisturize consistently. Apply a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer daily to keep skin soft and flexible. Well-hydrated skin allows hairs to grow out normally instead of curling back into the follicle.
  4. Address existing bumps carefully. For current ingrowns, apply a warm compress for a few minutes to soften skin. Never pick or squeeze - this creates scarring and infection risk.
