How to Build a Night Skincare Routine

Layer products from thinnest to thickest consistency, starting with cleanser and ending with moisturizer or oil.

Most people overcomplicate their night routine when consistency with basics beats complexity every time.

  1. Remove makeup completely. Use an oil-based cleanser or micellar water first if you wear makeup or sunscreen. This step dissolves everything that water-based cleansers can't touch. Follow with your regular cleanser.
  2. Cleanse thoroughly. Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that doesn't strip your skin. Massage for 30 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water. Your skin should feel clean but not tight.
  3. Apply treatments. If you use serums or treatments, apply them now while skin is slightly damp. Start with the thinnest consistency and work up to thicker formulas. Wait a minute between layers.
  4. Seal with moisturizer. Choose a moisturizer appropriate for your skin type and climate. Apply while your previous products are still slightly tacky to lock in hydration. Don't forget your neck.
