How to Build a Skincare Routine on a Budget
Start with three essentials—cleanser, moisturizer, SPF—then add one product at a time only when you need it.
Most people's skin problems come from doing too much, not too little—a good routine is boring and consistent, not Instagram-worthy.
- Map your actual needs. Look at your skin right now, not aspirational goals. Oily? You need oil control. Dry? Focus on hydration. Most people need basic maintenance, not a complex regimen.
- Start with the holy trinity. Gentle cleanser, basic moisturizer, broad-spectrum SPF 30+. These three do 80% of the work for healthy skin. Everything else is optimization.
- Shop drugstore first. CeraVe, Cetaphil, Neutrogena, and La Roche-Posay at drugstore prices often outperform luxury options. The active ingredients are identical—you're paying for packaging with expensive brands.
- Test before investing. Use each new product for 4-6 weeks before adding anything else. Your skin needs time to adjust, and you need to know what's actually working.
- Add strategically. Only introduce new products when you have a specific problem to solve. Niacinamide for oil control, hyaluronic acid for extra hydration, retinol for texture—but never all at once.
