How to Build a Post-Workout Skincare Routine
Cleanse immediately, hydrate aggressively, and protect relentlessly—your skin needs recovery just like your muscles do.
Your skin doesn't care about your fitness goals—it just wants you to stop letting sweat marinate in your pores like some kind of bacterial soup.
- Remove sweat immediately. Use a gentle cleanser within 30 minutes of finishing your workout to prevent pore-clogging bacteria from settling in. Skip harsh scrubs that irritate already-stressed skin.
- Cool down your skin. Apply a hydrating toner or mist to lower skin temperature and restore pH balance. This step prevents the tight, dry feeling that comes after washing off sweat.
- Lock in moisture aggressively. Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer while skin is still damp. Your post-workout skin is dehydrated from water loss and needs immediate replenishment.
- Protect if going outside. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ if your workout was morning or midday. Post-workout skin is more vulnerable to UV damage and hyperpigmentation.
