How to Build a Skincare Routine for Combination Skin
Treat your T-zone and cheeks as separate territories with targeted products while maintaining a unified cleansing and SPF approach.
Combination skin is not a compromise situation requiring mediocre products that split the difference.
- Map your zones. Identify exactly where your skin is oily versus dry or normal. Typically the T-zone produces excess oil while cheeks remain balanced or dry. Touch your face mid-afternoon to confirm which areas feel slick versus comfortable.
- Choose one gentle cleanser for everywhere. Use a low-pH gel or cream cleanser that removes oil without stripping. Your entire face needs the same clean foundation. Avoid anything that makes any part of your face feel tight or squeaky.
- Apply treatments by zone. Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer or serum on oily areas and a richer cream on dry zones. Apply different products with clean fingers to avoid cross-contamination. This takes thirty seconds longer but prevents the oily-dry cycle.
- Finish with universal SPF. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher across your entire face every morning. Choose a formula that works for your oiliest zone since you need coverage everywhere. Reapply over makeup with powder or setting spray.
