How to Build a Skincare Routine for Oily Skin

Start with gentle cleansing, add a lightweight moisturizer, and use SPF daily—oily skin needs hydration, not stripping.

Stop punishing your skin for being oily and start treating the dehydration underneath—the oil often follows.

  1. Choose a gentle cleanser. Pick a foaming or gel cleanser with salicylic acid or niacinamide. Avoid anything that leaves your skin feeling tight or squeaky clean—that means you've stripped your natural barrier. Cleanse twice daily, morning and night.
  2. Add a lightweight moisturizer. Oily skin produces excess oil partly because it's dehydrated underneath. Use a gel or water-based moisturizer with hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Apply to damp skin for better absorption.
  3. Apply SPF every morning. Choose a mineral sunscreen or lightweight chemical formula that won't pill under makeup. Zinc oxide works beautifully on oily skin and often has a subtle mattifying effect.
  4. Introduce actives slowly. Once your basic routine is established, add a BHA (salicylic acid) 2-3 times per week at night. Start with lower concentrations and build tolerance. Skip other actives on BHA nights.
