How to Build a Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin
Start minimal with fragrance-free basics and add one product at a time over weeks.
Sensitive skin is usually asking you to slow down, not spend more money on special products.
- Start with the bare minimum. Begin with just a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. Your skin needs time to adjust before you add anything else. Use these two products for at least two weeks before introducing anything new.
- Choose fragrance-free everything. Fragrance is the fastest way to trigger sensitivity reactions. Look for products labeled fragrance-free, not unscented. Unscented can still contain masking fragrances that irritate sensitive skin.
- Test patch before face application. Apply new products to your inner wrist or behind your ear first. Wait 24 hours to see if any redness or irritation develops. This simple step prevents face-wide reactions that take weeks to calm down.
- Add SPF as your third step. Once your cleanser and moisturizer routine feels comfortable, add a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Chemical sunscreens often trigger sensitivity, so stick with physical blockers.
- Introduce actives extremely slowly. If you want to add treatment products later, start with the gentlest options like niacinamide or low-percentage lactic acid. Use them once a week initially, then gradually increase frequency only if your skin tolerates it well.
