How to Build a Barrier-Repair Skincare Routine
Layer gentle, ceramide-rich products from thinnest to thickest consistency while avoiding actives until your skin barrier heals.
- Strip back to basics. Use only a gentle cleanser, barrier-repair moisturizer, and SPF for the first two weeks. Your skin needs time to rebuild without interference from actives, exfoliants, or multiple products competing for attention.
- Choose the right cleanser. Switch to a cream or oil-based cleanser that won't strip your skin. Look for ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, or squalane. Cleanse once daily in the evening only—morning rinse with water.
- Layer barrier-supporting ingredients. Apply products from thinnest to thickest: hyaluronic acid serum on damp skin, then a ceramide-rich moisturizer, then facial oil if needed. Each layer should absorb before adding the next.
- Lock everything in. Finish with a protective layer like petrolatum or a heavy cream containing cholesterol and fatty acids. This creates a physical barrier that prevents water loss while your natural barrier repairs itself.
- Protect during the day. Use mineral SPF daily—zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are less likely to irritate compromised skin. Reapply over makeup with powder or spray formulas to maintain protection without disrupting your routine.
