Starting Skincare in Your 50s

Build up slowly with gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF first, then add targeted treatments one at a time.

Your 50s skin doesn't need a 12-step routine to look good — it needs three things done religiously and maybe one smart addition.

  1. Start with the basics. Gentle cream cleanser, morning moisturizer, and SPF 30 minimum. Your skin needs consistency before complexity, and these three will handle 80% of your concerns.
  2. Add one treatment at a time. After two weeks with basics, introduce retinol or vitamin C. Start twice weekly, never both on the same night. Your skin will tell you if it's too much too fast.
  3. Layer strategically. Thinnest to thickest consistency, always. Vitamin C in morning under SPF, retinol at night over cleanser but under moisturizer. Simple chemistry prevents waste and irritation.
  4. Monitor and adjust. Good skincare should feel like nothing. If you're red, tight, or flaking, scale back frequency or switch products. Consistency beats intensity every time.
