How to Treat Sensitive Skin Without Reactions

Build tolerance slowly with minimal ingredients and patch test everything.

Sensitive skin is usually overstimulated skin pretending complexity helps when simplicity heals.

  1. Start with the basics. Use only cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF for two weeks. Choose products with five ingredients or fewer. Your skin needs to reset before you can identify what actually irritates it.
  2. Patch test religiously. Test new products on your inner wrist for 48 hours before putting them anywhere near your face. If you react, you've saved yourself days of inflammation. If you don't, try a small area behind your ear next.
  3. Layer moisture, not products. Apply moisturizer to damp skin, then add another thin layer once the first absorbs. This builds hydration without adding potentially reactive ingredients. Your skin barrier strengthens when it's properly hydrated.
  4. Introduce one thing at a time. Wait two weeks between adding new products to your routine. Use any new product every third day for the first week, then every other day, then daily if your skin tolerates it.
